Copyright Kate Charter 2017

Kate Charter grew up on her family farm in rural Cambridgeshire, but her love of cartoons and icy winds brought her north to study animation. At Edinburgh College of Art she specialised in 2D animation and children’s storytelling, graduating with a first class BA (Hons) in 2012. Her degree film Hannah and the Moon went on to win two New Talent Bafta awards and screened at over 40 international film festivals including Berlinale, Toronto and Edinburgh.

Today she works freelance from her cosy studio, creating work for clients including Scottish Book Awards, The National Mining Museum and Disability History Scotland. In 2014, she directed the short film ‘Googly’ through the Ideas Tap Short Film Fund. At the centre of her work are heartfelt, character driven stories, laced with humour. She is interested in exploring the way we consume and interact with stories. By incorporating white space and typographic elements, her films have the feel of animated picture books.

Outside the studio Kate runs film and animation workshops with a variety of groups; in particular, young people with additional needs. It is a constant reminder not to take herself too seriously.

Kate is always on the look out for new projects so please get in touch if you would like more information about her work.
